Great Camera! Excellent Pictures and Ease of Use! July 28, 2010 gatorbatch I purchased this camera because the portable Olympus FE-230 I previously used for my past 2 summer trips was inconsistent in picture quality. I travel as a leader for a student group and have so much other stuff to carry that I want a camera that slips in to my pocket and obviously takes great photos. My mother has a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 that takes exceptional pictures, so I looked in to getting one myself. The DMC-FP8 was top rated in Consumer Reports and turned out to be all that I wanted and more. The size is what I was looking for, the picture quality is excellent, and there are so many extra features that I wasn't even planning on but I got with this camera! I have just returned from 3 weeks in Europe and took about 1500 pictures. The clarity, color, and overall quality is fantastic. I was able to get larger shots in the frame when others I was with could not. I was also able to zoom in from quite a distance and capture a great photo. Battery life was very good, and ease of menu and options was simple. I will say that the one down side to the camera as noted by other reviewers is the ability to catch your finger in the photo due to the lens being located on the left side of the camera. However, I quickly adjusted my "habit" of grasping the camera over the front when taking two handed pictures, and at other times could easily take a photo just using my right hand only. Overall: I'm very pleased with the camera and thankful that I chose to get it prior to my trip! I would highly recommend the Lumix DMC-FP8!
Style and function had a child. They named it Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8. July 11, 2010 AmBlake (LA, CA USA) I didn't read the manual yet, and I don't necessarily need to. Its really easy to figure out and operate this camera. I haven't used many features yet, instead I usually keep it on ia (intelligent auto). Perfect for candid shots other cameras would have trouble capturing. This camera takes quick, crisp shots, and zooms without extendending its lenses. Some shots can be a little blurry despite the image stabilization, but that's not a frequent problem. I love it so far.
Luminx July 7, 2010 Frank I have only had this camera for 6 weeks, but so far I am happy with the performance. The only issue I have had so far is that you have to make sure you keep your finger out of the exposure area. With the lens so close to the edge it is easy to have a portion of your finger in the picture. The quality has been good, the control features are good and I am much happier with this one vice my old Olympus that suddenly disappeared.
Poor Picture Quality July 7, 2010 RockonPirates 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I feel one of the most important features of any camera is the quality of the photos. All of the photos taken with this camera were poor quality. I was quite surprised given all the positive reviews. I took two dozen pictures in different lighting conditions, indoor and out in automatic mode. When I loaded them on my laptop all of the pictures looked washed out. There was a fuzziness about them. The colors just seemed bland to me. So I pulled up some pictures from my older Kodak V550 (5MP) and these pictures had vivid colors and a crispness. Well to validate my thoughts further I borrowed a Sony compact point and shoot from a friend and took the cameras on a stroll and took indoor and outdoor pictures of the same scene with each of the them. I did this at dusk and again at full day light with both cameras set in the full automatic mode. Comparing the pictures side by side on the same laptop there was an absolute clear difference in the quality of the pictures. The Lumix FP8 pictures were washed out, reds and blues looked dull and faded. With the Sony the colors were bright, vivid, and photos were clear and had a nice pop to them. I changed some of the settings on the Lumix especially the one that turned "vivid" on. This did not help. Some other things I learned with the Lumix are that 12 mega pixels probably don't buy you anything maybe unless you want to print large 10X12 pictures. Also, I was intrigued that this camera had HD video. But what I realized after shooting several 30 second clips is that the HD video mode eats a lot of hard drive space and since the files are so large it takes a lot longer to transfer them to the HD drive. I switched the video mode to VGA and found that for my purposes the playback on a PC was the same quality as in HD mode and the files size was 70% smaller. I returned the Lumix FP8 today and decided to go with the Cannon SD1200IS which is an older model with 10MP and VGA video. Look at the 500 plus reviews and 99% of them rave about the picture quality. I will update this review when I receive the Cannon and compare photos.
I received the Canon SD1200IS. I did the same comparison picture quality test. The picture quality was much better with the Canon. I purchased this model refurbished by Canon from J&R for $99. It looks and feels brand new.
